Rockstar Launcher not working for GTA Online and Red Dead Online on PC as server goes down for maintenance

The Rockstar Games Launcher (RGL) has been shut down for maintenance and players of GTA Online and Red Dead Online have been unable to access the games. PC players need to use the Launcher to play any Rockstar Games title, and they have been unable to do so for quite some time now.

Rockstar Games had a big day yesterday with the release of GTA: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition. However, a large number of PC players have been unable to try the games out after Rockstar Games Launcher's servers shut down. The length of the maintenance period is currently unknown.

As expected, this outage has affected GTA Online and Red Dead Online players as well, as they are quite dependent on the Rockstar Games Launcher. Yesterday was also the weekly update launch day for GTA Online. As a result, player traffic remains high during this time.

Those who purchased the GTA Definitive Edition Trilogy have been unable to access their games since their purchase because of the server maintenance issue. Here are all the games and services that have been affected by this sudden outage:

Servers are up for all platforms except PC (Image via Rockstar Games Support)

Console players have been left unaffected by this issue for now. The servers for GTA Online and Red Dead Online are both up and running, since the outage is restricted to Rockstar Games Launcher only. A major reason for this could be the release of the GTA Trilogy, as several players have been eager to try it out.

The servers could have shutdown due to the increased traffic, or it could simply be bad timing for routine maintenance. As the above tweet points out, Rockstar allows players to access its single player games only after online authentication. Fans haven't been very happy about this requirement, as it can lead to situations like the one they're facing right now.

Unexpected Server Maintenance Pulls Down the Rockstar Games Launcher for GTA Online & Red Dead Online

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition was released yesterday, and it was a big day for Rockstar Games. However, soon after the Rockstar Titles Launcher's servers went down, a big number of PC players were unable to try out the games. The duration of the maintenance period is uncertain at this time. Rockstar Games Launcher is down and undergoing maintenance, according to a tweet from Rockstar Support.

The Grand Theft Auto: Definitive Edition is off to a shaky start. Fans have criticised the game for its lack of new features and small graphics enhancements, but it also has other flaws.

Now, the GTA Online and Red Dead Online gamers have been unable to access their games due to the Rockstar Games Launcher (RGL) being down for maintenance. To play any Rockstar Games game on a PC, you'll need to use the Launcher, which has been unavailable for quite some time.

Due to a server maintenance issue, those who purchased the GTA Definitive Edition Trilogy have been unable to access their games since their purchase. Along with this, Read Dead Redemption is also facing issues.

The server issues are leading to the following problems on Rockstar Games Launcher.

  • Authentication
  • Store
  • Cloud Services
  • Downloads

As a result, it not only inhibits individuals from playing a game they already own, but also from downloading it in the first place. Because there had been no earlier tweets about planned maintenance, this news came as a shock to many players.

For the time being, console players are unaffected by this problem, because the interruption is limited to the Rockstar Games Launcher, the servers for GTA Online and Red Dead Online are both up and functioning. One of the main reasons for this could be the publication of the GTA Trilogy, which has piqued the interest of many players.

It's possible that the servers were shut down owing to increasing demand, or that scheduled maintenance was performed at an inopportune time. GTA and Red Dead fans are furious about the unannounced maintenance, and everyone wants to know when they'll be able to play their favourite games on the Rockstar Games Launcher again.

What just happened? Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition arrived yesterday in the midst of massive anticipation from fans of the series. Sadly, the release has been far from smooth. Not only has Rockstar’s games launcher been offline for more than 17 hours, but the PC version has been removed from sale.

The GTA Trilogy arrived on November 11, but just a few hours after the remaster landed, Rockstar tweeted that its Games Launcher was down for maintenance, meaning those who bought the PC version have been left unable to play it.

At the time of writing, the Rockstar Games Launcher is still offline, around 17 hours after the firm's initial tweet. It appears that the issues have prompted Rockstar to remove the PC version of the trilogy from the company’s store. Interestingly, VGC reports that data miners have since discovered the PC version of the GTA Trilogy reportedly contains all the music that’s no longer licensed, as well as uncompiled code with developer comments.

The launcher’s issues mean other Rockstar games are also unplayable on PC, including Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto V, and their online elements.

Given the enormous number of people who play Rockstar’s games and the amount of money the company will be losing every minute these titles are inaccessible, we can expect the launcher to come back online soon enough. The latest tweet it posted, which was three hours ago, read: “We thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to work on restoring services for the Rockstar Games Launcher and supported titles.”

GTA: The Trilogy on PC is literally unplayable as Rockstar remove it from sale

GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition artwork

Only a few hours after it launched, GTA: The Trilogy on PC was taken down and is still unavailable for purchase.

The run-up to the launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition has been something of a rocky one, with the new visuals leaving fans split on whether they actually look better or worse than the original releases. When the remaster compilation did launch yesterday, numerous bugs and glitches were discovered, and now the game is literally unplayable on PC.

A few hours after launch, Rockstar Games stated that its Rockstar Launcher had been taken down for maintenance. Since GTA: The Trilogy’s PC version is only playable via the launcher, with no Steam or Epic Games Store alternative, PC players have gone nearly 24 hours without being able to play the game they bought.

With the launcher down, PC players can’t even play other Rockstar games, like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 – even in single-player. The PC version of GTA: The Trilogy is also unavailable for purchase at the moment, and is currently completely absent from Rockstar’s website.

Rockstar has yet to issue any further statement on the launcher’s shutdown. It only said that it will be temporarily offline for maintenance and, earlier today, thanked customers for their patience. There is no indication of when the launcher will be back up.

It’s entirely possible that Rockstar is also taking this time to address GTA: The Trilogy’s aforementioned bugs. The game is still freely available for purchase on consoles, so this isn’t quite a Cyberpunk 2077 situation, but the weird looking glitches and characters do seem reminiscent of that game’s launch.

When CD Projekt’s game launched last December the backlash to it led to it being temporarily delisted on PlayStation. CD Projekt even offered refunds, something Rockstar hasn’t done – probably because it intends to have the launcher back up sooner rather than later.

More: Gaming

GTA: The Trilogy’s buggy state is looking likely to be the reason why Rockstar didn’t send review codes out until the last minute, but this isn’t something exclusive to the studio.

The same thing has happened with most of the new releases this week, no doubt partly to game the Metacritic aggregate review score (since early reviews, particularly negative ones, can impact launch sales) and partly because development was ongoing right up to the launch.

That second issue isn’t really anyone’s fault, since the coronavirus pandemic continues to severely affect game development. Although releasing a game with known issues, just to meet a launch date, is not something any publisher should be doing.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. iOS and Android versions are scheduled for 2022.

Rockstar Games Launches Digital Storefront

Rockstar Games on Tuesday revealed that its Windows desktop application, the Rockstar Games Launcher — designed for gamers to access and purchase Rockstar PC titles in one place — is now available for download.

As well as accessing disc-based and digital titles, the launcher will provide users with features designed to organize their digital games library, including cloud save and automatic update functionality. They also will have the ability to receive the latest gaming news from the studio from within the app and shop for new titles to add to their collection.

The Launcher will support Rockstar titles such as Grand Theft Auto III, GTA VGTA: Vice City, GTA: San AndreasMax Payne 3: The Complete Edition, L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition and Bully: Scholarship Edition

Those who download the Launcher will immediately receive a free digital copy of GTA: San Andreas on PC for a limited time. The game will be available to access within the Launcher.

Digital storefronts have been appearing a lot lately. In June, Ubisoft unveiled its subscription service Uplay+, providing access to over 100 titles, including latest releases and classic games; and the following month, Electronic Arts expanded its EA Access service, first launched in 2014, to PlayStation 4 with access to over 200 titles. Nintendo, Microsoft and PlayStation also offer subscription services for digital games.

The 'GTA Trilogy' remasters completely broke Rockstar's PC launcher

The remastered GTA Trilogy was released yesterday for just about every console as well as for PC. If you head to Rockstar’s landing page for the game today, though, you might notice something missing. The PC version of the remastered games is no longer available.

That’s because the Rockstar Games Launcher — where the game is exclusively available on PC — is dead. Well, okay, it hasn’t been pronounced dead by the proper authorities just yet, but it definitely flatlined yesterday. A slew of technical issues related to the GTA Trilogy launch sent the Games Launcher spiraling into the abyss.

At this point, the launcher has been down for nearly a full day. Rockstar has been vastly uncommunicative about the cause of the outage but it’s affecting all of the developer’s PC games — not just GTA Trilogy. Don’t bother trying to log into Red Dead Redemption 2 for a while.

Could be a while… Rockstar initially tweeted that the launcher would be taken temporarily offline for maintenance a little after 2 p.m. ET yesterday — maintenance that likely wasn’t planned, seeing as it was a big release day for Rockstar. Then, nothing but silence from the company for about 15 hours. Yeah, 15 hours. When the company came back to give an update at 5 a.m. ET, it didn’t exactly provide much info.

“We thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to work on restoring services for the Rockstar Games Launcher and supported titles,” the company tweeted. Rockstar’s service status page provides no additional information.

As far as the public knows, the launcher could come back online in just a few hours. Or it could be down for much longer; Roblox’s recent outage left players offline for more than three days.

Plenty of other complaints, too — Those who have been able to download the GTA Trilogy haven’t been much happier than those stuck in launcher limbo. The remastered classics have been plagued by a number of oddities, ranging from just-plain-quirky to virtually unplayable.

Many of the remastered character models are downright uncanny, for one thing. The Switch versions of the remasters apparently suffer from enormous frame rate fluctuations and generally operate at much lower resolutions than on other consoles. Features meant to be cool upgrades, like weather patterns, sometimes end up making the games impossible to navigate, IGN reports. Lots of songs have reportedly been removed from the games, too, due to expired licenses.

Those interested in playing the remasters on a PC will need to just wait until Rockstar’s figured out a fix. All versions of the GTA games have been removed from other digital storefronts like Steam. Everyone else might want to wait, too, in the hopes that Rockstar will implement fixes for other console versions as well.
