Intellij Idea - Installation and Configuration



In this chapter, we will understand how to install and configure IntelliJ IDEA. The first step of the process starts with choosing the edition. As per your requirements, you can download community or ultimate edition. As name suggests, community edition is absolutely free and we can use it for commercial development as well. However, ultimate edition is paid version and we can evaluate it freely for 30 days.

Installation on Windows

IntelliJ is compatible with almost all versions of Windows prior to 2003. A comprehensive list will be: Windows 10/8/7/Vista/2003/XP. It is recommended that you shut down all other applications before you install IntelliJ on Windows.

System Requirements

  • A minimum 2 GB of RAM capacity is recommended for seamless performance.

  • For better visualization, 1024x768 screen resolution is recommended.

  • Minimum 300 MB disk space for installation and additional 1 GB for cache.

Downloading and Installation

  • Downloading − You can download windows installer from their official website.

  • Installation − Let us begin with the installation followed by the configuration steps. Installation of IntelliJ is similar to other software packages. Just double-click on the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

Installation on Linux

For installation of IntelliJ on Linux platforms, you need to note that a 32-bit JDK is not bundled, so a 64-bit system is recommended.

  • GNOME, KDE or XFCE desktop environment

  • Minimum 2 GB of RAM is recommended for seamless usage

  • 300 MB of disk space for installation and addition 1 GB for caches

Downloading and Installation

  • Downloading − You can download IntelliJ for Linux from their official website.

  • Installation − We have downloaded tar.gz bundle. Note that in our case bundle’s name was ideaIC-2017.2.5.tar.gz. It may change with the edition/version. Please use the appropriate bundle name.

First extract it using following command: $ tar xvf ideaIC-2017.2.5.tar.gz It will create new directory with idea-IC-172.4343.14 name. Now change directory to idea-IC-172.4343.14/bin/ and execute idea.sh shell script as shown below: $ cd idea-IC-172.4343.14/bin/ $ ./idea.sh Follow on-screen instructions to complete installation procedure.

Configure IntelliJ

The configuration steps are similar on both platforms. To begin configuration, launch IntelliJ application. Optionally, you can import the existing configuration from this wizard. Click on the next button to continue.

Step1 − If you are using the ultimate edition, then a license activation window will pop-up. Select evaluate for free option and click on the evaluate button as shown in the following image.

Step 2 − Accept the license agreement to proceed and follow on-screen instruction to start IntelliJ. You will see the Welcome screen of IntelliJ.

Step 3 − Now, it is time to configure the Java Development Kit (hereafter, we will refer to it as JDK) with IntelliJ. If JDK is not installed already then follow the instruction as in here.

  • On the Welcome screen, click on ‘configure’

  • Select ‘project defaults’ from the drop-down list

  • Select the ‘project structure’ option

In our Groovy scripts, we can use the annotation. With this annotation, we define dependencies for our script and they will be automatically downloaded and added to the classpath when we run our script. When we use IntelliJ IDEA we can use a nice intention that is part of the IntelliJ IDEA Groovy support to download the dependencies from our IDE editor. IDEA downloads the dependencies and adds it to the project module dependencies. This is useful because this will also add code completion for the classes in the dependency to our editor.

Let's see this with a little example. We have the following Groovy script in our Groovy project in IntelliJ IDEA:

When the project is a Gradle or Maven project we must make sure Ivy is part of the compile classpath because otherwise IntelliJ IDEA cannot download the dependencies using this intention. Hello World in Java (Windows)


This document instructs you on how to set up a Java programming environment for your WindowsWindows logo computer. It also provides a step-by-step guide for creating and compiling a Java program in IntelliJ and executing it from the command line.

You will need a 64-bit version of Windows 8 or 10.

    0.   Install the Java Programming Environment


The installer installs and configures a Java programming environment, including OpenJDK 11 and IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition 2021.1.

  • Log in to the user account in which you will be programming. Your account must have Administrator privileges.
  • Download the Windows installer lift-java-installer.exe.
  • Double-click lift-java-installer.exe to install the software. Enter your Windows password when prompted. Use all of the default options.

    Warning

    If you have previously used IntelliJ 2021.1, run this installer only if you want a clean re-install. The installer overwrites any existing IntelliJ 2021.1 settings with our novice-friendly settings.

    The installer also performs a clean re-install of Git Bash, which will overwrite any previous user settings, including .

  • Delete lift-java-installer.exe.
    1.   Open a Project in IntelliJ


You will develop your Java programs in an application called IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition.

IntelliJ organizes Java programs into projects. In our context, each project corresponds to one programming assignment. A typical project contains Java programs, associated data files, and course-specific settings (such as compiler options, style rules, and textbook libraries).

  • Download the project for your programming assignment to a convenient location (such as the Desktop).

    When you launch IntelliJ for the first time, it may take a minute or two to index your files; some features (such as auto importing) will be unavailable until this process completes.

    Warning

    Do not click New Project; this option is intended for advanced programmers. Also, always use Openwith a project folder, not an individual file.

  • When you are finished working, select the menu option File → Exit to exit IntelliJ. The next time you launch IntelliJ, your recent projects will appear in the Welcome to IntelliJ IDEA screen for easy access.
    2.   Create a Program in IntelliJ


Now you are ready to write your first Java program. IntelliJ features many specialized programming tools including line numbering, syntax highlighting, bracket matching, auto indenting, auto formatting, auto importing, variable renaming, and continuous code inspection.

  • To create a new Java program:
    • Re-open IntelliJ and the project (if you closed it in the previous step).

    • Click the project name in the Project View sidebar (at left), so that it becomes highlighted.

    • Select the menu option LIFT → New Java Class. When prompted, type HelloWorld for the Name and click OK.

  • In the main editor window, complete the Java program exactly as it appears below. (IntelliJ generates the gray boilerplate code automatically, possibly with the addition of a course header block comment.)

    If you omit even a semicolon, the program won’t work.
  • As you type, IntelliJ highlights different syntactic elements in different colors. When you type a left bracket, IntelliJ adds the matching right bracket. When you begin a new line, IntelliJ indents it.

  • To save the file, select the menu option File → Save All (Ctrl + S). When you save the file, IntelliJ re-formats it (as necessary).

    Tip

    IntelliJ is configured to automatically save changes that you make to your files upon various events (such as compiling, executing, closing a file or project, or quitting the IDE). We still recommend using File → Save All (Ctrl + S) to re-format your code.

    3.   Compile and Execute the Program (from IntelliJ)


Now, it is time to execute (or run) your program. This is the exciting part, where your computer follows the instructions specified by your program. Before doing so, you must compile your program into a form more amenable for execution on a computer.

  • Select the program that you wish to compile and execute in the the Project View sidebar. The program should now appear in the main editor window.
  • To compile your program, select the menu option LIFT → Recompile 'HelloWorld.java' (Ctrl + B). If the compilation succeeds, you will receive confirmation in the status bar (at bottom).

    If the compilation fails, a Recompile panel will open up (at bottom), highlighting the compile-time errors or warnings. Check your program carefully for typos, using the error messages as a guide.

  • To execute your program, select the menu option LIFT → Run 'HelloWorld' with Arguments (Ctrl + E). Since this program takes no command-line arguments, click OK.

    You should see the output of the program (in white), along with a message that the program finished normally (with exit code 0).

Tip

Use the LIFT menu to compile and execute your program from IntelliJ. The Build and Run menus support additional options for advanced programmers.

Also be sure that the main editor window is active before using the LIFT menu (e.g., by clicking the code you want to compile or execute).

    4.   Compile and Execute the Program (from the command line)


The command line is a simple and powerful mechanism for controlling your programs (e.g., command-line arguments, file redirection, and piping). IntelliJ supplies an embedded terminal for easy access to the command line.

  • Select the menu option View → Tool Windows → Terminal (Alt + 2).
  • This will launch a GitBash terminal where you type commands. You will see a command prompt that looks something like this: ~> The is the current working directory, where is shorthand for your home directory.
  • To compile your program, type the following command. More specifically, type the text in yellow that appears on the same line as the command prompt. ~>javac HelloWorld.java~> Assuming that the file is in the current working directory, you should not see any compile-time errors or warnings.
  • To execute your program, type the following command: ~>java HelloWorld Hello, World You should see the output of your program beneath the line on which you typed the command.

    Tip

    Typically, you should compile from IntelliJ (because IntelliJ highlights the lines on which any compile-time errors or warnings occur) and execute from the command line (because the command line makes it is easy to specify command-line arguments and use file redirection).

    5.   Textbook Libraries (from the command line)


To make our textbook libraries accessible to Java from the command line, you will use our wrapper scripts.

  • Computer Science: An Interdisciplinary Approach (including COS 126 students). The program Barnsley.java uses our standard drawing and standard random libraries in to draw a Barnsley fern. First download Barnsley.java. Then, use Windows Explorer to move it to a project folder (such as ). Finally, to compile and execute it, type the following commands in the terminal: ~>ls Barnsley.java COS 126.iml WELCOME.txt logo.png ~>javac-introcs Barnsley.java~>java-introcs Barnsley 10000 When you execute the program, a standard drawing window will appear and an image like this one will be generated, one point at a time:

The program CollidingDisks.java uses various libraries in to simulate the motion of n disks subject to the laws of elastic collision.     Yes. This installer includes IntelliJ and Java 11. The old installer may have used an earlier version of IntelliJ or Java. Be sure to uninstall the old version before proceding.
    I wrecked some of my IntelliJ settings. Can I rerun the installer to restore the settings?
    Yes. However, the proper way to reinstall software on Windows is to completely uninstall it and then to reinstall it. So, first, uninstall the software; then, run lift-java-installer.exe.
    How can I uninstall the software?
    • To uninstall everything, navigate to and launch the uninstaller .
    • To uninstall only IntelliJ, navigate to ; right click the uninstaller ; and select Run as administrator.

    2.   Create a Program in IntelliJ


Now you are ready to write your first Java program. IntelliJ features many specialized programming tools including line numbering, syntax highlighting, bracket matching, auto indenting, auto formatting, auto importing, variable renaming, and continuous code inspection.

  • To create a new Java program:
    • Re-open IntelliJ and the project (if you closed it in the previous step).

    • Select the menu option LIFT → New Java Class. When prompted, type HelloWorld for the Name and click OK.

  • In the main editor window, complete the Java program exactly as it appears below. (IntelliJ generates the gray boilerplate code automatically, possibly with the addition of a course header block comment.)

    4.   Compile and Execute the Program (from the command line)

In our Groovy scripts, we can use the annotation. With this annotation, we define dependencies for our script and they will be automatically downloaded and added to the classpath when we run our script. When we use IntelliJ IDEA we can use a nice intention that is part of the IntelliJ IDEA Groovy support to download the dependencies from our IDE editor. IDEA downloads the dependencies and adds it to the project module dependencies. This is useful because this will also add code completion for the classes in the dependency to our editor.

Follow the below demonstrated steps to install IntelliJ IDEA on the system:

Step1: Download IntelliJ IDEA using the Jetbrains website or using the below link:

Step2: After downloading, move to the Download location, and start the installer. A security warning may occur. Click on the 'Run' option.

Creating the Kafka Project

Step7: From the left side navigation panel, select 'Maven' or 'Gradle' option. It will show the Project SDK name. It should be java 8 (if properly installed).

Step8: Now, it's time to create a new project. For doing so, a GroupId, an ArtifactId, as well as Version value is required. Provide the following details and click 'Next'.

Here, 'firstgroupapp.jtp' is the name of the GroupId, 'helloproducer1' is the ArtifactId, and '2.0.0' is chosen as the Version number. The user can give as per the wish.

Step9: Next, the user needs to provide a project name and the location where the user wants to keep the project. Finally, click the 'Finish' button.

Note: It is good to keep the Project name, same as the ArtifactId.

In our Groovy scripts, we can use the annotation. With this annotation, we define dependencies for our script and they will be automatically downloaded and added to the classpath when we run our script. When we use IntelliJ IDEA we can use a nice intention that is part of the IntelliJ IDEA Groovy support to download the dependencies from our IDE editor. IDEA downloads the dependencies and adds it to the project module dependencies. This is useful because this will also add code completion for the classes in the dependency to our editor.

Let's see this with a little example. We have the following Groovy script in our Groovy project in IntelliJ IDEA:

We place the cursor on the annotation and enable the intention popup using (check Keymap Reference for the key combination). We select the option from the popup:

IntelliJ IDEA downloads the dependency. When we look at our Project Structure and at the Module Dependencies we see the downloaded dependency:

In our example, we added the Groovy script to a Groovy project in IntelliJ IDEA. When the project is a Gradle or Maven project we must make sure Ivy is part of the compile classpath because otherwise IntelliJ IDEA cannot download the dependencies using this intention. For example, we could add to a Gradle build file the following dependency .

Intellij Idea - Installation and Configuration



In this chapter, we will understand how to install and configure IntelliJ IDEA. The first step of the process starts with choosing the edition. As per your requirements, you can download community or ultimate edition. As name suggests, community edition is absolutely free and we can use it for commercial development as well. However, ultimate edition is paid version and we can evaluate it freely for 30 days.

Installation on Windows

IntelliJ is compatible with almost all versions of Windows prior to 2003. A comprehensive list will be: Windows 10/8/7/Vista/2003/XP. It is recommended that you shut down all other applications before you install IntelliJ on Windows.

System Requirements

  • A minimum 2 GB of RAM capacity is recommended for seamless performance.

  • For better visualization, 1024x768 screen resolution is recommended.

  • Minimum 300 MB disk space for installation and additional 1 GB for cache.

Downloading and Installation

  • Downloading − You can download windows installer from their official website.

  • Installation − Let us begin with the installation followed by the configuration steps. Installation of IntelliJ is similar to other software packages. Just double-click on the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

Installation on Linux

For installation of IntelliJ on Linux platforms, you need to note that a 32-bit JDK is not bundled, so a 64-bit system is recommended.

  • GNOME, KDE or XFCE desktop environment

  • Minimum 2 GB of RAM is recommended for seamless usage

  • 300 MB of disk space for installation and addition 1 GB for caches

  • For better visualization, 1024x768 screen resolution is recommended

Downloading and Installation

  • Downloading − You can download IntelliJ for Linux from their official website.

  • Installation − We have downloaded tar.gz bundle. Note that in our case bundle’s name was ideaIC-2017.2.5.tar.gz. It may change with the edition/version. Please use the appropriate bundle name.

First extract it using following command: $ tar xvf ideaIC-2017.2.5.tar.gz It will create new directory with idea-IC-172.4343.14 name. Now change directory to idea-IC-172.4343.14/bin/ and execute idea.sh shell script as shown below: $ cd idea-IC-172.4343.14/bin/ $ ./idea.sh Follow on-screen instructions to complete installation procedure.

Configure IntelliJ

The configuration steps are similar on both platforms. To begin configuration, launch IntelliJ application. Optionally, you can import the existing configuration from this wizard. Click on the next button to continue.

Step1 − If you are using the ultimate edition, then a license activation window will pop-up. Select evaluate for free option and click on the evaluate button as shown in the following image.

Step 2 − Accept the license agreement to proceed and follow on-screen instruction to start IntelliJ. You will see the Welcome screen of IntelliJ.

Step 3 − Now, it is time to configure the Java Development Kit (hereafter, we will refer to it as JDK) with IntelliJ. If JDK is not installed already then follow the instruction as in here.

  • On the Welcome screen, click on ‘configure’

  • Select ‘project defaults’ from the drop-down list

  • Select the ‘project structure’ option

  • Click on the ‘plus’ icon and select the ‘JDK’ option.

  • Select JDK’s home directory and follow the on-screen instructions.

Installing IntelliJ IDEA

Prerequisite: java8 should be installed on the system.

Follow the below demonstrated steps to install IntelliJ IDEA on the system:

Step1: Download IntelliJ IDEA using the Jetbrains website or using the below link:

Download the Community edition because it is free as well as open-source edition.

Step2: After downloading, move to the Download location, and start the installer. A security warning may occur. Click on the 'Run' option.

Step3: After the security check, the setup will start loading. A welcome screen will appear. Click next and follow the installer instructions.

Step4: Choose an appropriate installation location. Click Next.

Step5: Choose an appropriate desktop shortcut. If the user is working on a 64-bit machine, select accordingly. Also, select the '.java' file. This will associate the java files automatically with IntelliJ IDEA.

Click on the Next button.

Step6: Choose the start menu folder as 'JetBrains' (by default). Then, click Install.

Step7: The IntelliJ IDEA will start installing to the system.

After installing the setup, click on Next, then Finish.

In this way, IntelliJ IDEA will get installed to the system.


Creating the Kafka Project

Step1: Open the IntelliJ IDEA from its shortcut. A dialog box will open asking to import settings from the previous installation. Select 'Do not import settings' radio button. Click OK. This option is chosen because the user might be installing IntelliJ for the first time.

Step2: The JetBrains Privacy Policy will appear. Click on the checkbox and then click the 'Continue' option.

Step3: After opening, the installer will provide two UI theme options:

  1. Dracula theme
  2. Light Theme

The Light theme is the default one. After selecting anyone, click on 'Next Default plugins'.

In our tutorial, the default theme is selected, i.e., the Light one. The user can choose accordingly.

Step4: Next, the user will be asked to disable some default plugins (if required). Skip this step and click on 'Next Featured plugins'.

Step5: In this section, install the Scala support. This will allow users to develop Scala projects too. Click on the 'Start using IntelliJ IDEA'.

Step6: IntelliJ IDEA welcome screen will open. Click on 'Create New Project' option.

Step7: From the left side navigation panel, select 'Maven' or 'Gradle' option. It will show the Project SDK name. It should be java 8 (if properly installed).

In our tutorial, we have chosen Maven.

If not so, click on the 'New' option and select the respective home directory for JDK 8. Else, check the JDK 8 installation.

Note: Generally, the home directory for JDK will be the root directory only.

After selecting, click OK, then Next.

Step8: Now, it's time to create a new project. For doing so, a GroupId, an ArtifactId, as well as Version value is required. Provide the following details and click 'Next'.

Here, 'firstgroupapp.jtp' is the name of the GroupId, 'helloproducer1' is the ArtifactId, and '2.0.0' is chosen as the Version number. The user can give as per the wish.

Step9: Next, the user needs to provide a project name and the location where the user wants to keep the project. Finally, click the 'Finish' button.

Note: It is good to keep the Project name, same as the ArtifactId.

In the above snapshot, the name of the project is 'helloproducer1', and the project location is the 'Local C Drive'.

Step10: Now, the setup will ask to 'Enable Auto-Import' on the bottom-right side of the screen. Choosing this option will enable the IntelliJ IDEA to automatically download all the necessary dependencies, which we will define later in the 'pom.xml' file.
