Actual Window Manager

What's new in this version:

Actual Window Manager 8.14.5
- Overall system load is reduced
- Windows 10 Insider x64 build 21277+: The program crashed at startup
- Licensing: The evaluation period is prolonged by a third of its original
duration for the update versions released after the Free Updates Subscription expiration date
- Mirroring: Ability is added to flip the mirrored content both horizontally and vertically (except the window-to-window hardware accelerated mirrors)
- Window Actions: Ability is added to insert explicit delays into combo action sequences
Note: The ability to specify a delay for the Run Keyboard Macro combo items
has been removed; all existing such items will be converted automatically
to a separate Run Keyboard Macro item and explicit Delay item.
- Title Buttons: Ability is added to specify a name for custom Run Keyboard Macro buttons
- Per-application Audio Device Switcher: Sound switching now works in Chromium-based Microsoft Edge
- File Folders: Favorite Folders now support Unicode symbols
- An invalid memory operation could cause cascading errors in the Control Center at its startup if the "Collect usage statistics" option was enabled
- Some application windows (e.g. Directory Opus) stopped reacting on Control Center commands (like pausing/resuming or modifying the settings)

Tabbed Explorer: Numerous fixes:
- overall system load is reduced
- container window sometimes did not come in front after being activated
by a mouse click
- container window did not retain the Always-on-Top state
- container window's title bar flashed on switching tabs

- Actual Taskbar, Mouse Actions: Creating a custom mouse action assigned to
taskbar button left double click with no modifiers blocked single clicks
and therefore prevented normal taskbar operations, such as window
activation, minimization/restoration, etc.
- Virtual Desktops: Virtual Desktop Switcher displayed above screen saver
if the program was installed with the enabled "Support system utilities and
administrative tools" option.

Virtual Desktops: Numerous fixes for the Independent mode:
- Control Center might crash upon unloading or turning off a secondary
monitor
- the "Virtual Desktops" submenu in the notification area icon's context
menu showed the lists of desktops for the monitors currently turned off;
the same was true for a context menu of the Move to Virtual Desktop
title button and the system window menu's submenu
- at startup, Virtual Desktop Switchers from different monitors
might appear on the same monitor in certain desktop configurations
- Virtual Desktop Switchers from secondary monitors moved to a primary
monitor instead of hiding after turning off their host monitor
- Virtual Desktop Switchers did not update their position after changing
taskbar position/size

- Window Layout: In some cases statistics data could be flooded with erroneous
events
- Window Actions: The Run Keyboard Macro action forced its target window
remain foreground, which was inappropriate if a macro's purpose presumed
another window activation (especially when the action was activated by
any means other than "At Window Startup").
- Window Actions: Minimize-to-Screen floating icons placed at the right/bottom
edge of a monitor might get out of sight after reducing the monitor's
resolution.
- Configuration, Desktop Profiles: The "Preview" button did not work if the
"Current Windows screen saver" option was selected

Actual Window Manager 8.14.4
New:
- Internal security has been accurately revised and tightened to follow the principle of least privilege (in particular, for kernel objects used for inter-process communication)
- Internal error handling has been revised and improved for better interoperability with apps using .NET runtime (and probably some other frameworks)
- Internal handling of display-related information has been optimized to reduce the overall delay after changing the desktop geometry (i.e. attaching/detaching a monitor or changing a monitor resolution)
- Window Settings: The ability is added to apply window settings to such system pop-up windows as Action Center, Volume Mixer, Network, and tray notifications

Virtual Desktops: The ability is added to customize floating Virtual Desktop Switcher windows on-the-fly via context menu. The following features can be toggled:
- "on top" state
- orientation (horizontal/vertical)
- border and title bar
- resizable frame

- Selected options are remembered independently per each monitor

The context menu can be invoked by the following means:

- Alt+Space hotkey (the desired Switcher window must be activated first)

Changed:
- Actual Taskbar: Compatibility with Open-Shell Start Menu is restored
- Window Actions: Now the "Prevent window's accidental close" option works in Mozilla-based apps (Firefox, Thunderbird, Pale Moon) and some Chromium-based apps (Google Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi, Yandex.Browser, Brave, Skype for Desktop)

Fixed:
- In some rare cases some apps might get hung after reapplying their window settings or unloading Actual Window Manager
- Actual Taskbar, Windows 10 build 19041+: The Network window stopped moving to secondary monitors after clicking the Network icon in a secondary taskbar's notification area.
- Mouse: Moving a mouse (either freely or holding the left button pressed) imposed unwanted CPU consumption if the "Tight monitor boundaries" option was off.
- Mouse, Windows 7+ x64: If a 32-bit app that installs system-wide mouse hook
was launched after Actual Window Manager then clicking the right mouse button in any 64-bit console app's window (Command Prompt, Power Shell, etc.) made ActualWindowManagerCenter.exe "run away", therefore hogging the CPU heavily
- Virtual Desktops: Oracle VM VirtualBox's guest OS window stopped receiving mouse/keyboard input after switching virtual desktops
- Virtual Desktops: The "Auto-switch desktops" feature stopped working
- Title Buttons, Windows 7+: MS SQL Server Management Studio got hung after trying to close it via "File -> Exit" menu command if any extra buttons were added to its main window's title bar
- Title Buttons, Windows 10 x86 build 19041+: UWP apps crashed at startup if any extra buttons were added to their window's title bar.
- Title Buttons: Mozilla Firefox got hung after activating an Adobe Flash element in a web page, if any extra buttons were added to its window's title bar.
- Title Buttons: In some cases the Move to Monitor button's tooltip displayed incorrect monitor index (e.g. when a window was moved to another monitor using the alignment dots in the "Move to..." dialog).
- Title Buttons, Slack for Desktop 4.5+: Extra buttons covered new elements in Slack window' title bar (like Search edit box, Help button, or user's avatar button)
- Title Buttons: The Align action worked wrong after selecting it in the grouping button's context menu and then left-clicking the grouping button

Desktop Divider: The following bugs are fixed:
- tile layout frame's right/bottom border did not display on secondary monitors
- tile layout frame's thickness did not scale propery in high DPI resolutions
- CPU consumption skyrocketed needlessly when moving a mouse over a tile layout's preview in the "Put into" helper dialog

- tile preview sometimes did not update correctly when moving a mouse over a tile layout's preview in the "Put into" helper dialog
- Mirroring: Launching a window mirror with loose criteria (e.g. "Program" only) could result in capturing an improper window (like tooltip)
- Mouse Drag and Scroll: Pale Moon got hung after activating an Adobe Flash element in a web page if the "Make the entire window area responsive to dragging/sizing" feature was enabled
- Mouse: The "Activate window on mouse hover" feature stopped working after connecting to an already opened user session via Remote Desktop
- Window Actions, Mouse: Custom mouse action "Move to monitor - Having mouse pointer" could be applied only once to a certain window
- Window Actions, Mouse: In some cases, "Maximize horizontally" or "Maximize vertically" mouse actions did not work as expected on their first call
- Window Actions: Windows of Mozilla-based apps (Firefox, Thunderbird, Pale Moon, etc.) could not be stretched by a right click on their border
- Window Actions: Windows of Mozilla-based apps (Firefox, Thunderbird, Pale Moon, etc.) could not be resized by dragging their right/bottom border if they were stretched or snapped to a right/bottom boundary of a monitor

Window Actions: The following bugs are fixed in the "Move to" helper dialog:
- dialog was twice as large on monitors with higher DPI resolution
- when dragging a window preview, you could not align it using the Aero
Snap feature if the native Aero Snap was enabled in the system

- when a green alignment dot was hovered by a mouse, the desktop preview window that shows the dot's corresponding target location was slightly bigger than required and so might go beyond monitor's visible area
- Window Actions: Minimize-to-Screen floating icon could be dragged just once if the "Use double click" option was set in the window settings
- Desktop Profiles: Monitors could not be turned on in portrait orientation
- Configuration, Desktop Profiles: If a monitor was turned off in portrait orientation, its properties in the "Multiple Monitors > Monitors' Layout and Settings" panel got empty on next Configuration window opening
- Configuration, Title Buttons: Changing the "Use double click" option in the "Window Settings > Default Settings > Title Buttons > Action Options:AltMin" panel had no effect

Virtual Desktops: The following bugs are fixed:
- Suspending/resuming the Actual Window Manager Control Center might cause random memory errors in the Control Center process
- An active window on a desktop did not always get foreground when switching to that desktop
- Activating a desktop by clicking empty space of its cell in the switcher forced the desktop to lose its active window (if any)
- An active window lost its activation after being moved to "all desktops" (either manually or automatically)
- Changing a mode (Classic/Independent) messed Z-order of currently open windows
- Excel 2013+ "Find and Replace" dialog disappeared after switching to another desktop and back

- First virtual desktop got activated always when invoking a notification area icon's context menu for the following applications: Intel Graphics
Control Panel, Skype for Desktop, Slack for Desktop, MS Teams, KiTTY, Insync, Everything
- After switching from Classic to Independent mode, on some multi-monitor configurations two switchers might appear on the same monitor
- After changing a mode, switcher's placement stored and restored incorrect
- Tooltips with desktop names sometimes appeared in the top-left corner instead of the center
- After dragging a minimized wi- ndow's icon between switchers on different monitors the source switcher retained the icon until window's restoration
- Tabbed Explorer, Windows 10: The Search box stopped working in the tabbed
- File Explorer windows since the November update 1909 (build 18363)

- In Excel 2013+, after opening the "Find and Replace" dialog and then activating a main Excel window
- Window Actions: The "Block premature appearance of window" option did not work as declared in Chromium-based applications
- Window Actions: Applying the "Send to bottom" action at startup might make the Alt key appear to be pressed (actual pressing/releasing the physical
Alt key removed that effect)
- Window Actions: Custom title buttons/hotkeys for the "Run keyboard macro" action stopped working in the Default window settings
- Desktop Profiles, Configuration: The Identify button in the "Multiple
- Monitors - Desktop Profiles" panel displayed a monitor number in wrong place if monitor coordinates stored in a profile differed from actual ones
Text on buttons in the Evaluation dialog was garbled in some Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese)

- The "Auto-switch desktops" feature stopped working
- In Windows 8/8.1, hidden windows on inactive desktops did not appear back after their desktop's activation
- If a window got hidden on an active desktop and then another desktop was activated, switching back to the first desktop forced the extra buttons of the hidden window appear (they looked orphaned as their master window remained invisible)
- Actual Taskbar: Action Center button in secondary taskbars did not work if the main system taskbar was hidden
- Window Actions: The "Run keyboard macro" action did not work in combo sequences
- Window Actions: A rolled up window got unrolled upon its dragging if the "Fix minimal size" action was enabled in applied window settings

Changed:
Clipboard History: Some improvements are introduced:
- now it's possible to paste a formatted text entry as plain text either by pressing Ctrl-Enter or by using the "Paste text only" command in the context menu (this command has replaced the "Clear text formatting" command). Pasting as plain text does not modify the contents of the original entry

hiding/showing them by switching to another virtual desktop and back, thumbnail previews got empty for hidden windows (located on inactive

- Title Buttons: Extra buttons covered the standard ones in Firefox Quantum windows maximized on a secondary monitor that was shifted up or down relative to a primary one
- Title Buttons: Main window of Microsoft Visual Studio 2010+ got hung after closing it via the "File - Exit" menu command or the Alt-F4 hotkey if the

If you’re looking for your Windows 10 product key, you can find it by entering a quick command in the Command Prompt. Here’s how—plus a neat little trick for finding the product key using a Windows Registry method.

Find Your Windows 10 Product Key Using the Command Prompt

To find your Windows 10 product key using the Command Prompt, you’ll need to open the command line application with administrative privileges. To do this, type “cmd” in the Windows search bar.

type cmd in search bar

Command Prompt will appear in the search results. Right-click it and select “Run As Administrator” from the window that appears. If prompted, enter your Windows account password.

Run as admin option

Once open, copy and paste the following command and then hit the Enter key:

wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

The 25-digit product key will then appear.

Product key in Command prompt

Note: This method displays the Windows product key stored in your computer’s BIOS or UEFI firmware. In other words, it shows the original Windows key your computer came with. If you’ve installed Windows with a different key since then (or acquired a digital license), it will be different from the current key in use on your PC. If you want the current key in use on your PC, NirSoft’s ProduKey is a good graphical tool for finding it.

That’s all there is to it. This way is quick, but this isn’t likely a code you’ll remember very easily. If you’d like a faster way of accessing your product key in the future, you can use the Windows Registry method instead.

Find Your Windows 10 Product Key Using a Windows Registry Method

Update: This method is all over the web, but it doesn’t seem to return a real usable key on the latest version of Windows 10. (For example, this script in Microsoft’s TechNet gallery works differently, but also grabs output from “DigitalProductId” in the registry.) As of July 2020, we recommend you skip this section and use the above method instead.

The Windows Registry tip was initially posted by a user (whose account is no longer active) in the Microsoft forum.

First, open Notepad by right-clicking anywhere on the desktop, hovering over “New,” and then selecting “Text Document” from the menu.

Open a new text file

Copy and paste this code into Notepad:

Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") MsgBox ConvertToKey(WshShell.RegRead("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DigitalProductId")) Function ConvertToKey(Key) Const KeyOffset = 52 i = 28 Chars = "BCDFGHJKMPQRTVWXY2346789" Do Cur = 0 x = 14 Do Cur = Cur * 256 Cur = Key(x + KeyOffset) + Cur Key(x + KeyOffset) = (Cur \ 24) And 255 Cur = Cur Mod 24 x = x -1 Loop While x >= 0 i = i -1 KeyOutput = Mid(Chars, Cur + 1, 1) & KeyOutput If (((29 - i) Mod 6) = 0) And (i <> -1) Then i = i -1 KeyOutput = "-" & KeyOutput End If Loop While i >= 0 ConvertToKey = KeyOutput End Function

Next, click the “File” tab and select “Save As.”

save as in notepad

In File Explorer, set the “Save As Type” dropdown to “All Files” and give your file a name. You can use any name, but it has to be a .vbs file. You can name it something like:

save file type as vbs file

Once you’ve entered a file name, save the file.

You can now view your Windows 10 product key at any time by opening the new file.

How to Upgrade From Windows 10 Home to Pro

What to Know

  • Go to Start Menu > Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Go to the Store to purchase a Windows 10 Pro upgrade.
  • If you have a Windows 10 Pro product key, go to Start Menu > Settings > Updates and Security > Activation > Change product key.
  • To install Pro on another PC, re-enter the Windows 10 Home product key on current PC, then enter the Pro product key on new PC.

This article explains how to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro via the Windows Store or by entering your Pro product key. You can find out which version of Windows you have by checking your system settings.

How to Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro via the Windows Store

If you haven't paid anything for Pro yet, and no one has handed you a copy, the most straightforward way to upgrade is from the Windows Store. Here's how:

  1. First, check for any pending Windows updates on your PC.

  2. Next, select the Start Menu > Settings.

  3. Select Update & Security.

  4. Select Activation in the left vertical menu.

  5. Select Go to the Store. This link leads you to the Windows Store.

  6. To purchase the upgrade, select Buy.

  7. Log in with your Microsoft account, then enter your payment method. Windows will immediately upgrade.

Upgrade From Windows 10 Home to Pro via a Product Key/Digital License

If you have a copy of Windows 10 Pro you should also have a product key (alternately called a license key) to enable Windows 10 Pro. You'll need this key to replace your Windows Home product key.

Here's how to replace your current product key:

  1. Make sure you have the latest Windows updates.

  2. Navigate to Start Menu > Settings > Updates and Security > Activation.

  3. Under Activation, select Change product key. The Product Key window opens.

  4. Enter the 25-digit Windows Pro product key.

  5. Select Next. If your key is correct, the installation starts immediately, and you'll soon get a message that Windows is upgraded.

Transferring Windows 10 Pro Upgrade to Another Machine

Since you had a full Windows 10 operating system before the Pro upgrade, you can remove the Pro upgrade from its current machine and then transfer it to another machine.

Complete this process online so that Microsoft can register that you removed the Pro upgrade.

To re-install your original Windows license, which will make the Pro upgrade available to install on another machine:

  1. Look at the bottom of your Windows laptop, or on the top/side of a desktop tower. There might be a sticker showing your original Windows product key; alternatively, it might be in the manuals or other material that came in your PC's box.

  2. Go to Start Menu > Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Change Product Key.

  3. Enter the product key in the Change product key field to "downgrade" to your old Home license.

  4. Your upgrade license is now freed up and can be installed on another machine.

Thanks for letting us know!

There was a time when users had to write down their Activation keys just in case they lose it someday and need to reinstall Windows – as you can imagine, this was a headache, but it was how things went before Windows 10 showed up.

With Windows 10 Microsoft changed the whole activation process – in an attempt to simplify it and remove the whole DVD-key thing that is frankly getting too old in this age of instant-everything delivered by the Internet.

Microsoft is continuously innovating on the Windows platform – no matter how many fancy features Apple comes up with for OS X, Windows remains the most stable and flexible operating system with a company that provides continuous support backing it.

But no software is perfect – nobody makes bug free software since all code is written by humans and humans make mistakes.

Windows is no exception, so sometimes the activation simply fails and leaves you with no clues about how to fix it. This guide will try and help you figure out what exactly is wrong with your Windows and attempt to fix it.

How do I fix an Activation key that doesn’t work on Windows 10?

Activating Windows 10 isn’t always simple, and issues with the activation key can occur once in a while. Regarding issues, here are some common problems reported by users:

  • Windows 10 not activated after upgrade
    • This is a common problem that can occur with Windows 10.
    • If you encounter it, be sure to try to activate your copy of Windows 10 again.
  • Windows 10 product key doesn’t work
    • Sometimes your product key won’t work on Windows 10. If this happens, make sure that your activation key is genuine.
    • In addition, be sure that this key wasn’t used to activate Windows 10 on other PCs.
  • Windows 10 activation error 0x803f7001, 0x8007007b
    • Various errors can occur while trying to activate Windows 10, and if you encounter some of these issues, try to fix them using one of our solutions.
  • Windows 10 activation key will expire soon

1. Check if Windows is activated

  1. Open the Start Menu and type Activation then click on the See if Windows is activated in results.
Windows 10 not activated after upgrade
  2. Here, if the activation status says Connect to the Internet to activate Windows you can click Activate to manually activate Windows – this will obviously require an internet connection.
Windows 10 product key doesn't work

This should attempt to reactivate Windows if you are connected to the Internet – this would usually fix all of the problems related to activation for you, but if for some reason this did not work you can give a shot to the 2nd solution.

2. Run SLUI 4 command

  1. Open the Start Menu and type Run, then open the first result.
  2. In the Run prompt, type SLUI 4 and press Enter.
    Windows 10 activation error 0x803f7001, 0x8007007b
  3. An activation prompt to take over your PC – here you have to select your country and click Next.
Windows 10 activation key will expire soon
  4. Once you have selected your country, you simply have to call one of the listed numbers and follow the instructions given by Microsoft Support.

While the first solution should fix most activation issues as it is quite literally remaking an attempt to activate itself, the 2nd solution will fix your activation issue if there is something wrong with your PC’s settings or activation code.

3. Select Do this later option

If your activation key isn’t working, you might want to try activating Windows 10 later. Due to a large number of users, it’s possible that Microsoft’s servers are overwhelmed and that can cause the problem with activation.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to fix this problem on your own, and you’ll just have to try again in a couple of hours or days. Few users reported that they choose Do this later option, and then their Windows 10 activated a couple of days later automatically, so you might want to consider doing that as well.

4. Restart your Internet connection and your PC

If your activation key isn’t working for Windows 10, the issue might be related to your Internet connections. Sometimes there might be a glitch with your network or its settings, and that can prevent you from activating Windows.

However, you might be able to fix the problem simply by restarting your router/modem. To do that, turn off your router/modem by pressing the power button on it. Wait for 30 seconds and turn the device back on again.

Once your modem/router boots, try to activate the Windows again. If the problem is still there, restart your PC and try again.

In some rare cases, there might a glitch with your system that is interfering with the activation. If that’s so, simply restart your PC and try to activate Windows 10 again.

5. Make sure that you’re trying to activate the correct version

Expert Tip: Some PC issues are hard to tackle, especially when it comes to corrupted repositories or missing Windows files. If you are having troubles fixing an error, your system may be partially broken. We recommend installing Restoro, a tool that will scan your machine and identify what the fault is.
Click here to download and start repairing.

According to users, sometimes your activation key might not work if you’re trying to activate the wrong version of Windows 10. As you know, there are two versions of Windows 10 available, Home and Pro, and the two offer different features.

As a result, the key for Windows 10 Home won’t work for Windows 10 Pro and vice versa. So if you’re unable to activate your copy of Windows 10, be sure that you’re using the activation key for the proper version of Windows.

6. Reset your license status

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu.
  2. You can also open it by right-clicking the Start button.
  3. Choose Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
Windows 10 not activated after upgrade
  4. Enter the following command slmgr.vbs -rearm and press Enter to run it.
Windows 10 product key doesn't work

In some cases, you might encounter certain glitches while trying to activate Windows 10. If your activation key isn’t working, you might be able to fix the problem by resetting the license status.

After running the command, close Command Prompt and restart your PC. Once your PC restarts, try to activate Windows again.

7. Try to force the activation

  1. Start Command Prompt as administrator like we showed you in one of our previous solutions.
  2. Now enter slmgr.vbs -ato command and press Enter to run it.
    Windows 10 activation error 0x803f7001

After the command is executed, the issue with activation should be resolved.

8. Activate Windows using Command Prompt

  1. Start Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. When Command Prompt starts, enter slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx and press Enter to run the command. Be sure to replace X letters with the actual activation key.
Windows 10 activation key will expire soon

According to users, you might be able to activate Windows 10 right from Command Prompt. This is relatively simple to do, and you can do it by running a single command. After running this command, the problem should be resolved.

9. Make sure that you use this key on only one PC

If your activation key isn’t working, it’s possible that you already used it to activate another copy of Windows 10 on a different PC. If that’s the case, you’ll need to deactivate the other copy of Windows and then try to activate Windows 10 on your PC.

Keep in mind that your key is tied to the hardware on which it was activated. Even if you don’t use Windows 10 on that old PC, you need to remove license information from the hardware.

If you don’t know how to do that, contact Microsoft and ask them to do that remotely for you.

10. Make sure that your activation key is genuine

On some rare occasions, it’s possible that you can’t activate your copy of Windows 10 because the key isn’t genuine. If you already used this key to activate Windows 10 before, then your key should be genuine and the problem is caused by something else.

However, if this is the first time that you’re trying to activate Windows 10 with this key, it’s possible that the key isn’t genuine. Many third-party websites offer to sell Windows 10 keys, and most of these websites are designed as a scam.

If you want to be sure that your key is 100% genuine, purchase it directly from Microsoft or from one of its official distributors.

Windows is an incredible operating system with complexities beyond one person’s understanding, but it is well understood and is able to use by millions around the world because of it.

Licensing and activation problems are something we will have to deal with for as long as Windows costs money.

However, troubleshooting problems related to it have only been getting easier with every iteration, and simply calling Microsoft Support is quite possibly the easiest solution to it.

What was it that said your key was invalid?

Which method above did you use to find your key? The one you extracted may have been a mass upgrade OEM key.

Hi smrtalec,

What operating system are you currently running? Was this computer upgraded to the current system, or was this OS installed on the computer since you first bought it?

You will probably want to use the key that notepad returned because the key on the sticker is an OEM mass upgrade key.

Thanks for answering so promptly.  The OS is Windows 7, which came installed on the pc when I purchased it in 2014, directly from Dell. I'll follow what you said and use the one that the machine gave me. Again, thanks for the help.

Chapter 10. Managing Activation Keys

Activation keys provide a method to automate system registration and subscription attachment. You can create multiple keys and associate them with different environments and Content Views. For example, you might create a basic activation key with a subscription for Red Hat Enterprise Linux workstations and associate it with Content Views from a particular environment.

You can use activation keys during content host registration to improve the speed, simplicity and consistency of the process.

Activation keys can define the following properties for content hosts:

  • Associated subscriptions and subscription attachment behavior.
  • Available products and repositories.
  • A life cycle environment and a Content View.
  • Host collection membership.

Note that activation keys are used only when hosts are registered. If changes are made to an activation key, it is applicable only to hosts that are registered with the amended activation key in the future. The changes are not made to existing hosts.

Content View Conflicts between Host Creation and Registration

When you provision a host, Satellite uses provisioning templates and other content from the Content View that you set in the host group or host settings. When the host is registered, the Content View from the activation key overwrites the original Content View from the host group or host settings. Then Satellite uses the Content View from the activation key for every future task, for example, rebuilding a host.

When you rebuild a host, ensure that you set the Content View that you want to use in the activation key and not in the host group or host settings.

Using the Same Activation Key with Multiple Content Hosts

You can apply the same activation key to multiple content hosts if it contains enough subscriptions. However, activation keys set only the initial configuration for a content host. When the content host is registered to an organization, the organization’s content can be attached to the content host manually.

Using Multiple Activation Keys with a Content Host

A content host can be associated with multiple activation keys that are combined to define the host settings. In case of conflicting settings, the last specified activation key takes precedence. You can specify the order of precedence by setting a host group parameter as follows:

$ hammer hostgroup set-parameter \ --name kt_activation_keys \ --value name_of_first_key, name_of_second_key. \ --hostgroup hostgroup_name

10.1. Creating an Activation Key

You can use activation keys to define a specific set of subscriptions to attach to hosts during registration. The subscriptions that you add to an activation key must be available within the associated Content View.

Subscription Manager attaches subscriptions differently depending on the following factors:

  • Are there any subscriptions associated with the activation key?
  • Is the auto-attach option enabled?

Based on the previous factors, there are three possible scenarios for subscribing with activation keys:

  1. Activation key with no subscriptions specified.

With no subscriptions specified and auto-attach enabled, hosts using the activation key search for the best fitting subscription from the ones provided by the Content View associated with the activation key. This is similar to entering the command.

  2. Activation key providing a custom subscription pool for auto-attach.

If there are subscriptions specified and auto-attach is enabled, hosts using the activation key select the best fitting subscription from the list specified in the activation key.

  3. Activation key with the exact set of subscriptions.

If there are subscriptions specified and auto-attach is disabled, hosts using the activation key are associated with all subscriptions specified in the activation key.

Custom Products

If a custom product, typically containing content not provided by Red Hat, is assigned to an activation key, this product is always enabled for the registered content host regardless of the auto-attach setting.

Procedure

To create an activation key, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Satellite web UI, navigate to Content > Activation keys and click Create Activation Key.
  2. In the Name field, enter the name of the activation key.
  3. If you want to set a limit, clear the Unlimited hosts check box, and in the Limit field, enter the maximum number of systems you can register with the activation key. If you want unlimited hosts to register with the activation key, ensure the Unlimited Hosts check box is selected.
  4. In the Description field, enter a description for the activation key.
  5. From the Environment list, select the environment to use.
  6. From the Content View list, select a Content View to use. If you want to use this activation key to register hosts, the Content McAfee Safe Family 2020 License key Crack must contain the Satellite Tools repository because it is required to install the.
  7. Click Save and when your new activation key appears in the Activation Keys window, click the name to edit.

For CLI Users

  1. Create the activation key:

    # hammer activation-key create \ --name "My_Activation_Key" \ --unlimited-hosts \ --description "Example Stack in the Development Environment" \ --lifecycle-environment "Development" \ --content-view "Stack" \ --organization "My_Organization"
  2. Obtain a list of your subscription IDs:

    # hammer subscription list --organization "My_Organization"
  3. Attach the Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscription UUID to the activation key:

    # hammer activation-key add-subscription \ --name "My_Activation_Key" \ --subscription-id ff808181533518d50152354246e901aa \ --organization "My_Organization"

    # hammer activation-key content-override \ --name "My_Activation_Key" \ --content-label rhel-7-server-satellite-tools-6.6-rpms \ --value 1 \ --organization "My_Organization"

10.2. Updating Subscriptions Associated with an Activation Key

You can change the subscriptions associated with an activation key using the web UI or using the Hammer command-line tool.

Note that changes to an activation key apply only to machines provisioned after the change. To update subscriptions on existing content hosts, see Section 4.7, “Bulk Updating Content Hosts' Subscriptions”.

Procedure

To update the subscriptions associated with an activation key, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Satellite web UI, navigate to Content > Activation keys and click the name of the activation key.
  2. Click the Subscriptions tab.
  3. To remove subscriptions, select List/Remove, and then select the check boxes to the left of the subscriptions to be removed and then click Remove Selected.
  4. To add subscriptions, select Add, and then select the check boxes to the left of the subscriptions to be added and then click Add Selected.
  5. Click the Repository Sets tab and review the repositories' status settings.
  6. To enable or disable a repository, select the check box for a repository and then change the status using the Select Action list.
  7. Click the Details tab, select a Content View for this activation key, and then click Save.

    # hammer activation-key subscriptions \ --name My_Activation_Key \ --organization "My_Organization"
  2. Remove the required subscription from the activation key:

    # hammer activation-key remove-subscription \ --name "My_Activation_Key" \ --subscription-id ff808181533518d50152354246e901aa \ --organization "My_Organization"

For the option, you can use either the UUID or the ID of the subscription.

  3. Attach new subscription to the activation key:

    # hammer activation-key add-subscription \ --name "My_Activation_Key" \ --subscription-id ff808181533518d50152354246e901aa \ --organization "My_Organization"

For the option, you can use either the UUID or the ID of the subscription.

  4. List the product content associated with the activation key:

    # hammer activation-key product-content \ --name "My_Activation_Key" \ --organization "My_Organization"

For the option, enter for enable, for disable.

10.3. Using Activation Keys for Host Registration

You can use activation keys to complete the following tasks:

  • Registering new hosts during provisioning through Red Hat Satellite 6. The kickstart provisioning templates in Red Hat Satellite 6 contain commands to register the host using an activation key that is defined when creating a host.
  • Registering existing Red Hat Enterprise Linux hosts. Configure Red Hat Subscription Manager to use Satellite Server for registration and specify the activation key when running the command.

Procedure

To use an activation key for host registration with an existing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 host to Satellite Server, complete the following steps:

  1. Download the consumer RPM for your Satellite Server. This is located in the directory on the host’s web server. For example, for a Satellite Server with the host nameenter the following command on the host to register:

    # rpm -Uvh http://satellite.example.com/pub/katello-ca-consumer-latest.noarch.rpm

This RPM installs the necessary certificates for accessing repositories on Satellite Server and configures Red Hat Subscription Manager to use the server’s URL.

  2. On the host, enter the following command to register the host to Satellite using the activation key:

    # subscription-manager register --activationkey="My_Activation_Key" \ --org="My_Organization"
  3. To view a list of hosts for an organization, on Satellite Server, enter the following command:

    # hammer host list --organization "My_Organization"
  4. After registering a host to Satellite Server, install the package on the host so that it can report back to Satellite Server:

    # yum install katello-agent

The Red Hat Satellite Tools 6.6 repository provides this package.

Multiple Activation Keys

You can use multiple activation keys when registering a content host. You can then create activation keys for specific subscription sets and combine them according to content host requirements. For example, the following command registers a content host to your organization with both VDC and OpenShift subscriptions:

# subscription-manager register --org="My_Organization" \ --activationkey="ak-VDC,ak-OpenShift"

Settings Conflicts

If there are conflicting settings in activation keys, the rightmost key takes precedence.

  • Settings that conflict: Service Level, Release Version, Environment, Content View, and Product Content.
  • Settings that do not conflict and the host gets the union of them: Subscriptions and Host Collections.
  • Settings that influence the behavior of the key itself and not the host configuration: Content Host Limit and Auto-Attach.

10.4. Enabling Auto-Attach

When auto-attach is enabled on an activation key and there are subscriptions associated with the key, the subscription management service selects and attaches the best-matched associated subscriptions based on a set of criteria like currently installed products, architecture, and preferences like service level.

You can enable auto-attach and have no subscriptions associated with the key. This type of key is commonly used to register virtual machines when you do not want the virtual machine to consume a physical subscription, but to inherit a host-based subscription from the hypervisor. For more information, see Configuring Virtual Machine Subscriptions in Red Hat Satellite.

Auto-attach is enabled by default. Disable the option if you want to force attach all subscriptions associated with the activation key.

Procedure

To enable auto-attach, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Satellite web UI, navigate to Content > Activation Keys.
  2. Click the activation key name that you want to edit.
  3. Click the Subscriptions tab.
  4. Click the edit icon next to Auto-Attach.
  5. Select or clear the check box to enable or disable auto-attach.
  6. Click Save.

For CLI Users

To enable auto-attach on the activation key:

# hammer activation-key update --name "My_Activation_Key" \ --organization "My_Organization" --auto-attach true

10.5. Setting the Service Level

You can configure an activation key to define a default service level for the new host created with the activation key. Setting a default service level selects only the matching subscriptions to be attached to the host. For example, if Actual Window Menu Registration key default service level on an activation key is set to Premium, only subscriptions with premium service levels are attached to the host upon registration.

Procedure

To set the service level, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Satellite web UI, navigate to Content > Activation Keys.
  2. Click the activation key name you want to edit.
  3. Click the edit icon next to Service Level.
  4. Select the required service level from the Soda PDF Home 12.0.86.2145 Crack + License Key 2021 Free. The list only contains service levels available to the activation key.
  5. Click Save.

For CLI Users

To set a default service level to Premium on the activation key:

# hammer activation-key update --name "My_Activation_Key" \ --organization "My_Organization" --service-level premium
