Watch your favorite TikTok over and over by setting it as a live wallpaper

If you have yet to jump on the TikTok train, maybe this will convince you: you can use one of the platform’s millions of videos as a live wallpaper for your phone’s home and lock screens. That means that instead of a motionless image, you’ll have a video running behind all your app icons.

If you’ve recently upgraded to Android 12, you’ll find this among the system’s wallpaper options. If you’re an iPhone user, the process is not as intuitive, but it’s even simpler.

Keep in mind that not all videos on the platform can become live wallpapers—their availability will depend on whether the creator allows other users to download them. Also, having a video playing in the background will drain your battery much faster than a photo, so remember that when you have to plug in your device before the end of the day.

Still, worth it.

How to set a TikTok video as a live wallpaper on an Android phone

Setting a TikTok video as a live wallpaper on an Android phone is easy but requires a lot of steps. Just open TikTok, find a video you like, tap the three dots on the right side of the screen, and hit the Set as wallpaper option. The app will then prompt you to download the wallpaper plugin from Google Play.

Open the plugin app and tap on Open TikTok to set wallpaper. When you do, a full-screen preview of the video will play, and if it looks good to you, you can tap Set as wallpaper, followed by Set wallpaper at the bottom of your screen. Android will then ask you to choose whether you want to set the video as your home screen background, or if you also want it on your lock screen.

[Related: Fix your boring Android background with live wallpapers]

This last setting is important. Your phone will remember your pick and use it every time you choose a new live wallpaper. If you want to change it, you won’t be able to do so easily: you’ll need to go to Wallpaper & style (long press on an empty space on your home screen), set an image as your background, and then open the TikTok app to repeat the live wallpaper process. Another limitation is that you can’t have a live wallpaper only on your lock screen—it’s either your home screen alone or both.

Your live wallpapers will be saved in a gallery inside the TikTok plugin. To open it, tap the icon, then Open TikTok to set wallpaper. From there, you can also adjust the background’s settings: tap the cog icon in the upper right corner of your screen and use the slider to change the volume, or tap the toggle switch next to Double-tap to pause video to gain the ability to do just that. To delete a file, open the plugin, tap the three dots in the upper right corner and choose Delete

You can also access your live wallpaper gallery through the Android 12 interface. Just long press on any empty space on your home screen, choose Wallpaper & style, and then go to Change wallpaper. There, scroll down to find the videos under the TikTok logo. You can’t change the wallpaper settings here, and you’ll notice the app’s integration with Google’s latest operating system update is not seamless, as you won’t be able to see a preview of a video until you tap on it. Before you do that, you’re stuck with TikTok icons that give you absolutely no clue to which file is which.

How to set a TikTok video as your lock screen on an iPhone

On iPhones, there’s no TikTok-based path that makes it easy to set videos as a wallpaper. Still, because you have fewer options, the process might be even simpler than it is on Android.

When you find the video you want on TikTok, tap the Share button (the curved arrow) and select Live photo. This is basically the iOS version of a live wallpaper, but because it’s considered an image, the operating system will automatically save it to a new folder (conveniently called Live photos) within the Photos app.

To set it as a background, follow the same path you would use with a regular picture: go to Settings, Wallpaper, and Choose a wallpaper. There, scroll to the right folder, select the file you want, tap Set,and select where you want to use it.

[Related: Customize your iPhone by ditching these boring default settings]

There are two caveats when it comes to live photos on iOS. The first is that they only animate as lock screen backgrounds. If you choose to set a video for both home and lock screens, you’ll be stuck with the first frame as your home screen background. If you try to start it up with a long press on your home screen, your iPhone will think you’re trying to edit your apps. The second drawback is that unlike Android, the live wallpaper will not play automatically on your lock screen—you’ll have to press and hold for playback to begin.

Still, having a live wallpaper is a great idea if you want something fun to look at whenever you check your notifications or simply want to blow the uninitiated minds of those who have only ever seen static backgrounds.

On the screen of Android smartphones, we have the habit of constantly changing the wallpaper we use. In the Play Store, there are several themes, some of which can be animated.

Now, imagine that you can use videos or GIFs as wallpaper. With them, our customization options can improve considerably. Check out our tutorial on how to use GIFs and Wallpaper videos on Android.

Getting the right videos or gifs

Although you can use any of the formats we mentioned, there are some sites that have specific categories for using videos and GIFs as wallpaper on your phone. Among the main options, we recommend taking a look at the Gfycat.

The service is actually a collection of GIFs, with a great focus on memes, but when looking for “cinemagraph”, for example, you will have an interesting selection of videos to be wallpapered on your phone. If you like one of them, follow these instructions to save them as a video:

  1. Search for the video you want and tap it. On your page, tap and hold on it until you see the option "Download video".

    Playback

If you prefer to save what you like as a GIF, look near the video for an icon represented by a “paper plane” and an “arrow indicating down. When you click on it, the GIF will be saved automatically.

Setting the video as wallpaper

To set up the video we download as our wallpaper, we’ll need to download an app from the Play Store. Check out how to download and use the application:

  1. In the Play Store search for “Video Live Wallpaper Free”, or use our link;
  2. Open the application and tap the "+" button. On the next screen, find the saved video that should be in the “Download” folder by default;
    Playback
  3. Back on the app's home screen, leave only the images you want for wallpaper selected and tap “Set live wallpaper”. You will see a preview of how your video will look, if everything is right, tap on "Set wallpaper", and choose to leave it only on the home screen, or on the home screen and lock screen.

    Playback

Setting a Gif as wallpaper

The steps for placing a Gif as a wallpaper on Android are very similar to what we did for the video. For that, we will also need a Play Store app. Check out the steps:

  1. In the Play Store search for “GIF Live Wallpaper” or use this link;
  2. Click on the image icon in the upper left corner of the screen, and look for the saved Gif;

    Playback

  3. On the next screen, the Gif will appear in its original size, and may be small. To resize it, just enlarge the image, just as we do to zoom in on a page or on a conventional image. When finished resizing, touch the icon at the bottom left of the screen to proceed;

    Playback

  4. Tap on “Set wallpaper”, and you will be on the Android home screen with the new wallpaper.

    Playback

If you get tired of wallpapers in videos or GIF, all you need to do is change the wallpaper in the conventional way that is done on your Android, without the need to open the apps we use.

How to Set a Video as Wallpaper on iPhone & iPad

How to Set a Video as Wallpaper on iPhone & iPad

Have you ever wanted to set a video as the wallpaper on your iPhone or iPad? You’re certainly not alone in that regard, as it sounds like a neat customization right? Although there’s no official support for video wallpapers, there’s a workaround that you can use to enjoy videos as your wallpaper of an iPhone, at least on your lock screen.

If you’re already familiar with setting a GIF as wallpaper then you might know where this is going. For some quick background, the Live Photos feature has been around for a while now, and they are basically animated versions of pictures that you normally take using your iPhone or iPad. Apple allows you to set these live photos as your wallpapers just like any other picture. So therefore, to set a video as your wallpaper, you take a clip and you convert the video to Live Photo, then set that as your wallpaper.

How to Use Video as Wallpaper on iPhone Lock Screen

First, we’ll need to convert your video into a live photo using a free third-party app before you can set it as the wallpaper. So, let’s get started with the procedure:

  1. Head over to the App Store and install Video to Live by Pixster Studio on your iPhone or iPad. Launch the app to proceed.

How to Set a Video as Wallpaper on iPhone & iPad
  2. Next, select the video that you want to convert from your photo library.

How to Set a Video as Wallpaper on iPhone & iPad
  3. Now, you’ll have the option to crop the part of the video that you want to use as the live photo by dragging the ends of the clip as indicated below. Tap on the download icon at the bottom-right corner to convert the video to a live photo.

How to Set a Video as Wallpaper on iPhone & iPad
  4. In this step, you’ll be able to preview your new live photo. Tap on “Save” to save it to your photo library.

  5. Now that you’re done with the conversion, you can proceed with setting the output image as your wallpaper. Head over to Settings on your iPhone, scroll down and tap on “Wallpaper” to continue.

How to Set a Video as Wallpaper on iPhone & iPad
  6. Here, tap on the “Choose a New Wallpaper” option located right at the top.

  7. Now, select the “Live Photos” album and choose the live photo that you just converted using the app.

  8. Once selected, you’ll be able to preview your new live photo by simply long-pressing on it. Tap on “Set” to access more options.

How to Set a Video as Wallpaper on iPhone & iPad
  9. You can set it either as your home screen wallpaper, lock screen wallpaper, or both. Choose your preferred option and you’re pretty much done.

How to Set a Video as Wallpaper on iPhone & iPad

There you go. You’ve learned a neat trick to using videos as wallpapers on your iPhone and iPad.

Keep in mind that your new wallpaper will only animate in the lock screen and you’ll need to long-press on the screen to view the animation. If you were expecting your video to loop automatically whenever you’re on the lock screen, you’re out of luck. At the moment, this is as close as you can get to using video wallpapers on your iPhone. Perhaps that sort of eyecandy will arrive in a future iOS version, but for now this is as close as you’ll get.

Likewise, you can use GIFs as your wallpapers too. Although Apple allows you to choose GIFs from the wallpaper selection menu, they don’t animate when you long-press on the screen, unlike a live photo. Therefore, you’ll need to convert your GIF to a live photo using a third-party app and then follow these steps to set it as an animated wallpaper.

Considering you like to personalize your device with video wallpapers, you may also be interested in learning how to automatically change your iPhone wallpaper with the Shortcuts app. You can select a bunch of your favorite photos and make your iPhone switch between them on a timely basis.

Hopefully, you were able to convert your videos to live photos and use them as animated lock screen wallpapers without much trouble. What are your overall thoughts on this neat workaround? Should Apple add video wallpapers as a feature in future iterations of iOS and iPadOS? Do you know of another method to get this done? Let us know your thoughts and experiences in the comments, and don’t miss out on more Live Photo tips if you’re interested in those.

Want to play a video as animated background wallpaper? There’s now a new tool to do the job via GPU rendering.

    1.) Download Gpu Video Wallpaper

You can either go to previous link, click ‘Code’ button and select ‘Download Zip’, or click on the button below to download it:

2.) Run the software to play animated wallpaper

Open file manager and un-compress the zip archive, then navigate to the source folder. There right-click on blank area and select “Open in Terminal”.

Next you can run command to play video as animated wallpaper:

You can type “./gpu’ (without quotes) and hit Enter to auto-complete the command. Instead of typing the path to video file, drag and drop video from file manager can be easier.

The tool depends on xrandr, pcregrep, and mpv. First run may prompt either to install the dependencies or not. Type y and it will install them automatically.

    3.) Stop the animated wallpaper:

Stop the command via Ctrl+C will not stop the animated wallpaper, you need to run below command in the same terminal window:

    ./gpu-video-wallpaper --stop

4.) Install the tool for system wide use:

If you like the software, and want to run the command anywhere in any terminal window, copy the executable files to /usr/local/bin via command:

    sudo cp gpu-video-wallpaper xwinwrap /usr/local/bin/

Then you can use this command instead to play video as animated wallpaper:

    gpu-video-wallpaper /PATH/TO/VIDEO

And adding flag if you want to start animated wallpaper at login. So the command will be:

Want to play a video as animated background wallpaper? There’s now a new tool to do the job via GPU rendering.

Gpu Video Wallpaper is the project. As the name indicates, it uses GPU for rendering video with low CPU usage.

The software uses MPV to play video file. So mp4, mkv, flv, gif, and large list of video formats are supported. And it plays video animated wallpaper in Dual- or Multi-monitors.

Next you can run command to play video as animated wallpaper:

    ./gpu-video-wallpaper /PATH/TO/VIDEO

So the command will be:

    gpu-video-wallpaper --startup /PATH/TO/VIDEO
